Saturday Morning Cartoons: Dungeons & Dragons

As the original RPG [Role Playing Game], Dungeons & Dragons released in the mid-1970’s to considerable amounts of praise — not to mention still thriving some almost 40-years later. Even with the video game boom — and inevitable crash — of the early-80’s, D&D still kept players engaged in tabletop form.

In 1983, Marvel Productions and CBS partnered to create the Dungeons & Dragons Saturday Morning cartoon. D&D would air for three seasons before it was inevitably canceled by the network — scripts were already being written for the fourth-season, which was being written as the final season.

The show revolved around 6 characters — Hank the Ranger, Eric the Cavalier, Diana the Acrobat, Presto the Magician, Sheila the Thief, and Bobby the Barbarian. The rapscallion cast is transported to the unnamed D&D realm when they decide to take a ride on the — assumed — local amusement park’s Dungeons & Dragons roller coaster.

When they arrive, they are greeted by their Dungeon Master and are each given a weapon and a role as they are attacked by a dragon — all of which is explained and introduced within the first 50-seconds of the first episode [it probably to you longer to read these last several paragraphs than it will to watch.]. Not to mention that Bobby even nabs a pet and names it within that 50-second window, Uni the Unicorn.

For the remainder of the episode and throughout the series, each character quickly adapts to their new surroundings, almost suggesting that they were in no way strangers to a 20-sided die. As the series carries on, the characters attempt to find a way home but are often side tracked as they help citizens along the way. And since the show was canceled before they could wrap the series up, one can only assume they are still trapped inside the fantasy role playing game today.

I was watching these with my step daughters a couple weeks ago. I haven’t watched them in years. Surprising voice acting actors in this.. Buddy from Charles in Charge, Ralph the mouth from Happy Days, Nicholas Bradford from Eight is Enough, Optimus Prime (as Venger), and Megatron (as Uni). Quite a combo.

D&D was a pretty spectacular SMC. I always feel old saying it, but they don’t make them like they used to.
