Sony Online Entertainment’s President and PSN Hack

Announced on August 21, Sony would perform maintenance on its online service PSN from 9:30a.m. – 4:50p.m. on August 8. The service was taken down a day early due to an alleged hacker attack admitted to by a group on Twitter.

The same group admittedly behind the attack on PSN made a bomb threat to American Airlines flight 362 which was boarding 185 people, one of which was Sony Online Entertainment’s president, John Smedley. Flight 362, headed from DFW Airport to San Diego, was immediately diverted to Phoenix, Arizona.

During this time PSN users were unable to login to their accounts. The error message received at attempted logins indicated that the service was down for maintenance. Sony later release a statement indicating that the real reason was do to “overwhelming artificial traffic”.

Sony later released the following statement:

“Like other major networks around the world, the PlayStation Network and Sony Entertainment Network have been impacted by an attempt to overwhelm our network with artificially high traffic.’

‘Although this has impacted your ability to access our network and enjoy our services, no personal information has been accessed.’

‘We will continue to work towards fixing this issue and hope to have our services up and running as soon as possible.’

‘We regret any inconvenience this may have caused.”

The hackers responsible for this have also turned their attention to other faces of the video game industry. In a tweet they ensured that they had the power to affect Blizzard’s services as well as League of Legends. Blizzard later announced problems on the servers and with Diablo 3.

Sony announced a day later that PSN was up and running and the scheduled maintenance was to be postponed. Smedley confirmed, via twitter, that his plane was indeed diverted but would not share any more information. The FBI also refuse to disclose any further details as this issue is now one of national security.
