Uncut SAILOR MOON Dub To Premiere With Hulu Live-Stream Event

Viz Media has announced that it will premiere the first four episodes of its uncut, remastered dub of the original Sailor Moon anime on Hulu with a live-stream event at 11 PM EST/8 PM PDT on September 5. As reported by io9, he event — which also includes Q&A’s with the new cast and a trivia contest for viewers with prizes — will be simulcast on Viz’s YouTube channel and their online video portal, Neon Alley.

Viz announced they had acquired the license to the beloved ’90s anime back in May. A new English dub, with more faithful scripts, was also announced, as well as plans to remaster the entire series in HD as well as restore elements cut from the original American broadcast. The cast was unveiled at this year’s Anime Expo, with Stephanie Sheh as the voice of Sailor Moon. The new dub will be released along with the Japanese originals on lavish Blu-Ray/DVD box sets, as well as separate DVD box sets; Part 1 of Season 1 will be released on November 11.

To promote the home video release, Viz has also been releasing the original Japanese-language broadcasts on Hulu, newly subtitled, with two episodes going up every Monday. This is in addition to the brand new Sailor Moon Crystal, which premiered July 4 on Hulu, Neon Alley and Crunchyroll. New episodes air bi-weekly, with the show set to run 26 episodes. Despite criticism from fans of the original anime, Crystal has been an enormous success, with Crunchyroll getting over a million views for the premiere episode alone.

In its original American syndicated broadcast, the first two seasons of Sailor Moon were heavily edited to fit Stateside broadcast standards. The series broke through when it was picked up by Cartoon Network, with its popularity paving the way for further seasons to be adapted with censorship reduced, although not entirely. The new Viz dub intends to fully honor the integrity of the series, which aired in Japan from 1992-1997.
