31 Days of Horror Event: Get Pumped for a Marathon of Horror

Letter from the editor:

Wow! It’s already been a year, and although I feel older than I should, it certainly doesn’t feel like a long time has passed since our last ’31 Days of Horror’ marathon. I had a blast writing short reviews for films such as The Happiness of the Katakuris, Child’s Play 2and The Eye 2, and I know many of you were just as happy reading them.

Unfortunately, I was overwhelmed with how big of a task writing 31 reviews ended being, and didn’t make it through the entire month. So in light of last year’s failed attempt, this year I’ve already started reviewing and am receiving assistance from some of our best writers at AC.

On top of the overwhelming nature of last year’s quantity of reviews, I was disappointed in myself that I hadn’t reviewed more than just films — due to a lack of time, ultimately — and decided this year we’ll better represent Another Castle’s approach to ‘All things nerd.’ Although we’ll continue mini-reviewing films, we’re expanding our material to reflect Another Castle’s coverage and are now including games, manga, anime, comics, and more! We know you’ll love reading these reviews as much as we did writing and planning, and hope you’re just as excited for ’31 Days of Horror’ as Jason is at the start of summer camp season!

Here’s how it’s going down:

  1. Review Length — Quality reviews take some time to write out; a lot of time, actually. Despite wanting to write a quality review for all 31 titles, it just isn’t entirely possible. Each review will be approximately 450 words, making them more of a mini-review than a full one.
  2. Breakdowns — Again, these reviews will be short and will only include a limited amount of information / overall impressions — think of it as more of a synopsis and a brief why to watch, play, or read. However, we’ll be sure to provide the most important information such as story, gore & scares, and our overall thoughts.
  3. Thorough — No, not in really any way. But we’ll be sure to include the most pertinent info on the media in the shortest amount of time.
  4. All Things Nerd — In keeping with our slogan, we will be representing geek mediums across the board. Joining our live-action horror film theme from 2013, you can look forward to comics, anime, manga, tabletop, and even Twitch streams joining the slew of reviews. We’re pretty stoked about the varying amount of content and think we found at least one thing for every reader here to enjoy!

EDIT: Unfortunately, the recommendation that was given for Why Don’t You Play in Hell? as a horror film was incorrect; it’s an action movie, albeit a gory one, not a horror movie. Replacing the October 7 addition will be another Sion Sono film titled Cold Fish. However, we’d still highly recommend the original film (WDYPIH?) to anyone looking for a fantastically bizarre action comedy. In short, it was phenomenal.

Additionally, we couldn’t get enough players together to play Zombicide, so that will be replaced by the film Rigor Mortis.
