First Egyptian Feminist Comic-Strip Magazine Launched

A new feminist comic-strip magazine, aimed at confronting and exposing the taboo topics of Egyptian society, has been launched. Al Arabiya News reports that the publication, Al-Shakmagiya Magazine, will focus on gender-based violence, sexual harassment and women’s rights. The magazine is produced by Nazra for Feminist Studies, an organization that works to raise awareness of gender issues.

The London-based Asharq Al-Awsat, which broke the story, says that Al-Shakmagiya‘s first issue “addresses thorny social issues in Egyptian society using the power of words, a quill and color, in a bid to end the state of silence and denial surrounding taboos concerning women.” The magazine will be published quarterly. A launch party was held at the Feminist Institute in Cairo at the end of October.
