RAT QUEENS Co-Creator Arrested For Domestic Abuse

Reported on November 20, Roc Upchurch, the artist and co-creator of the breakout Image Comics fantasy series Rat Queens, has been arrested for domestic abuse after allegedly beating his ex-wife. Upchurch was arrested in Henry County, GA on October 31 and charged with battery and”Family Assault” as a “First Offense Misdemeanor.” According to Bleeding Cool, which reached out to Upchurch–legal name John Charles Upchurch–he has made bail. Soon after the incident, his ex-wife published a blog post describing the details of the event.

Neither Upchurch’s Rat Queens co-creator, writer Kurtis J. Wiebe, or Image Comics has offered comment on the arrest at this time. Rat Queens began publication in September 2013, was nominated for the 2014 Eisner Award for Best New Series and is being adapted by Heavy Metal and Weta Workshop’s Pukeko Pictures into an animated television series.
