TEKKEN 7 Will Not Include ‘Lucky Chloe’ in U.S. Release

Lucky Chloe, a new character designed for the upcoming fighting game Tekken 7, will not be in the game’s U.S. release after receiving negative online feedback. Game director Katsuhiro Harada announced on Twitter that the character will be restricted to Asia and Europe in response. Harada unveiled Lucky Chloe — a female fighter with cat ears, pink paws, a tail, headphones and pigtails — at a recent live stream event.

A thread on NeoGAF criticized the character, finding her design unappealing and stereotypical of J-pop stars’ attire. The thread, and several others, were forwarded to Harada through Twitter. In response, Harada revealed Chloe’s Asian/European exclusivity, but was also highly critical of the backlash. In an online statement Harada explained, “By the way, Are you ‘Western’ only one bulletin board? Hello small world. I’ll make muscular & skinhead character for you.”

The game developer in question is named Harada, not Hanada. Hope this helps.

As far as I’m concerned, he can keep this character design. While I think she does look incredibly stupid, even in the wacky world of Tekken, perhaps if the series ever decided to freshen up its fossil of a fighting engine, this backlash wouldn’t have happened. That’s MY problem with Lucky Chloe. Putting a goofball new character design doesn’t mean anything is “different”, you’re fooling people! Look at Virtua Fighter’s roster; unique characters with their own characteristics. There is nothing appealing about cliché anime cat girl!! What is her victory pose? Swing her hips to the side, curl her fists like paws, wink, look into the camera and say “Nyah?” I haven’t seen that before!? Keep it.
