DC Ends NEW 52 Imprint, Ushers in 24 New Lines

February 6, 2015 — There’s a lot of news churning out of the DC Comics press room today. Due to launch June 3, 2015, DC announced 24 new titles, some changes to the more successful ongoing runs, and the end of their New 52 imprint. A total of 49 runs will kickoff this endeavor, with a promise of new lines debuting throughout the following year as well.

As for the 25 on-goings which are already established, their numbers will continue as is, and additional talent such as Gene Luen Yang joining John Romita, Jr. on Superman has the DC fan base buzzing.  DC also announced Bryan Hitch returning to DC Comics to write and draw JLA and Ming Doyle will be the esteemed writer on Constantine: The Hellblazer and the artist on Dark Universe.

“This heralds in a new era for the DC Universe which will allow us to publish something for everyone, be more expansive and modern in our approach and tell stories that better reflect the society around us. Whether you’ve been a DC fan your whole life, or whether you are new to comics – there will be a book for you beginning in June.” -DC Entertainment Co-Publisher Dan DiDi.

DC has faced some fire over the last couple years, as a result of their handling of LGBT issues. In addition to a growing consensus that Marvel might be more diverse. It’s a positive step seeing DiDi addressing these concerns within a public release, and to witness DC as a whole casting a broader focus.

DC Comics claims they’ll be keenly focused on “going back-to-basics with its legendary characters, like Batman, Superman and Wonder Woman”. With plans to also renovate important side characters to be more contemporary and ensure more diversity.

These innovated new characters will most certainly be impacted by the popular television shows and upcoming major motion pictures. “More than ever before, DC Comics fans are being exposed to our rich portfolio of characters through multiple sources, including an unprecedented number of highly successful TV shows, video games and upcoming major motion pictures,” Co-Publisher Jim Lee went on to say, “We are looking to extend that experience within publishing to ensure there is a comic book for everyone.  For example, fans of the Arrow television show may want more stories about Black Canary. Now they can find modern, fresh takes on the character in the pages of her standalone series both in stores and digitally.”
