SONY ONLINE ENTERTAINMENT Transforms into Daybreak Game Company

On February 2, 2015, Sony Online Entertainment, an online game developer under Sony Corp. since 1996, announced its departure from the conglomerate and purchase by investment firm Columbus Nova. Under the firm SOE has become Daybreak Game Company.

SOE was best known for their massive online titles such as Star Wars GalaxiesEverQuest games, PlanetSide games, DC Universe Online and the recently released H1Z1. Since the announcement, Daybreak Game Company has confirmed it will continue to work on the above titles, as well as Everquest Next and other games started while still under the Sony umbrella.

John Smedley, the President of Daybreak Game Company has been very vocal on his Twitter, and the company has taken to Reddit in order to connect with fans of their popular titles during this time of change.

With the studio’s new independence from Sony, it will expand its reach beyond Sony and PC. “Can’t wait to make Xbox games,” Smedley told Twitter. The developer intends to develop games for Xbox and mobile platforms in the future.
