Revolutionary for its time, Ultima games paved way for Western RPG classics before slipping back into the folds of time. With them followed many facets of the gaming experience which Ultima titles introduced. A new Kickstarter from OtherSide Entertainment has not only the boldness to bring that all back, but the talent to make it authentic, and relevant in their game, Underworld Ascendant.

Cherished titles the likes of BioShock, Deus Ex, and Elder Scrolls owe nearly everything to the groundbreaking Ultima games. The series not only established never before created concepts such as 3D immersion, but were games that delivered personal autonomy and ever-changing experiences that games today typically fall short of — despite more impressive technology and hefty promises of just that.

Finally, 23 years after Ultima Underworld was released, the series creators have emancipated the franchise. This news ignited excitement throughout the video game world. Indie developer OtherSide Entertainment, led by Paul Neurath, made haste and has cast his bid to breathe life back into the franchise. The development company is equipped with some of the most innovative minds in modern gaming (Deus Ex, Uncharted, Last of Us, and BioShock Infinite), not to mention Paul Neurath’s credits as co-founder of LookingGlass as well as leading the creation of groundbreaking titles including Ultima Underworld, System Shock, and Thief.

OtherSide Entertainment is turning to Kickstarter as a means of raising funds. OtherSide and her incredible staff believe they have what it takes to make their new game, Underworld Ascendant, worthy of her heritage. The Kickstarter page is chock-full of blessings and enthusiastic  praise from industry developers the likes of Ken Levine (BioShock), Cliff Bleszinski (Gears of War), and even Lord British himself.

“For those of us lifelong gamers that go back to the early days the Underworld franchise, created by Paul Neurath, represents a watershed event on what an immersive 3D true role-playing game can be.  Personally I am as excited about Underworld returning as any game I can imagine.” – Richard Garriott

OtherSide’s fantastic efforts have garnered more than $440,000 in a matter of 9 days, the $160,000 left to raise in a matter of 18 days only further proves how much the gaming community wants this game made and how much faith they have in this all-star team.

Once again, we have until Friday, March 6, 2015 to fund Underworld Ascendant. Although a minimum Kickstarter donation of $1.00 are accepted, starting at $25.00 supporters can garner a copy of the game and impressive but limited issue perks.

An intriguing Early Access pass to the game begins at just $35.00 including all lower tier perks like wallpapers, the digital soundtrack, and Kickstarter exclusive content. Big spending donors, starting at $100.00, will receive a digital copy of Underworld Ascendant as well as a boxed copy, in addition to everything included in lower tiers. As the price increases, so does the loot value.

Donating to Underworld Ascendant could help revolutionize the gaming circuit for a whole new generation of players. The gaming market lacks games which preserve exploration, and provide worlds where the dangers and safe havens must be discovered.  It lacks elaborate games which divorce from hand holding and instead immerse the player into rich lore, languages, and mystery.  With a visionary crew and a series as significant as Ultima, OtherSide Entertainment has the capacity to push the envelope and create something unseen.

I was hoping it’d meet that final stretch goal and have local co-op. But there is still time. Either way it’s looking like it will meet the minimum.

locally co-op, As in Lan? I wonder if it’ll have a graphical update too, it should be interesting.

Possibly, but I’m thinking it’s a plug and play kind of local co-op. How that would work, not sure. It’s a nice dream. They are no where near there so i haven’t investigated the details. Just saw that it was possible and thought it’d be awesome.
