Sony Announces New STAR WARS: BATTLEFRONT Game

In a post on the official PlayStation blog highlighting the new titles to be released throughout 2015 for PS4, PS3 and the PS Vita, Sony announced that a new installment of the famous Star Wars: Battlefront series will be released for the PS4. Gamepur, which reported the news, speculates that Sony will announce more about the game at E3 2015.

The original Battlefront, a dual third-person and first-person shooter that put players in battles across all sides in both the original trilogy and prequel trilogy eras and developed by Pandemic Studios, was released in 2004 for the PS2, the XBox and the PC, receiving wide critical praise and commercial success. Its 2005 sequel, Battlefront II, which followed a soldier as he transitioned from a clone trooper to a veteran Imperial Stormtrooper and part of the famed 501st Legion–known as Vader’s Fist in Star Wars lore–was even more popular than its predecessor (the PS2 version currently holds an 84% on Metacritic).

Both titles, like the vast majority of Star Wars video games, were published by LucasArts; that company was gutted by Disney in 2013 after its 2012 purchase of Lucasfilm (although it still remains nominally open as a licensor). The new Battlefront game, like all future Star Wars games, will be developed by EA.
