USAGI YOJIMBO to Resume Publication in May

Dark Horse Comics announced on February 13, 2015, that Stan Sakai’s storied creator-owned comic Usagi Yojimbo will resume publication with issue #145 in May after a three-year hiatus. The new issue, as the official press release notes, is the first in the Usagi ongoing series since February 2012.

The new issue also kicks off a new story arc, with Usagi–a wandering samurai whose name literally translates from Japanese as “rabbit bodyguard”–and his thief friend Kitsune fighting against a clan of ninjas intent on recovering a mysterious scroll that Kitsune has stolen. The issue will be in black and white, like all Usagi comics, and is priced at $3.50.

Begun in 1984 and published by Dark Horse since 1996, Usagi Yojimbo is one of the longest-running creator-owned titles in comics history. Sakai, who writes and draws every issue, went on hiatus in 2012 due to his commitment drawing the 47 Ronin miniseries for Dark Horse, for which he received an Inkwell Award in 2014. He also drew the recent miniseries Usagi Yojimbo: Senso, which mashed up his characters with H.G. Wells’ The War of the Worlds.Sakai also dealt with his wife, Sharon, battling a brain tumor, from which she passed away last November.
