Thoughts on MORTAL KOMBAT X

There has been quite a bit of hype behind the upcoming Mortal Kombat game since the initial leaks of the MK logo and poster. Mortal Kombat X will mark the first game to be on the Xbox One and PlayStation 4 respectively and seems set on track to please us all yet again. NetherRealm Studios is hard at work on the game and in exactly two months from today, players around the world will get to experience this for themselves.

One of the biggest things with this new game is the fact that they will be focusing on a story set in the future. MKX shall tell a completely new storyline that promises to deliver newer characters while still keeping some of the series veterans, such as Scorpion and Sub-Zero. Some of these newer characters consist of Cassie Cage (Johnny Cage’s daughter) and Kotal Kahn, who has taken control of Outworld after the events of Mortal Kombat (2011) or MK9 as some know it by. Gameplay videos that have been popping up that make the game seem like the past entry but with better graphics, ability to interact with the environment (no doubt inspired by their work on Injustice) and three different fighting style variations, which takes us back to the days of the PlayStation 2 Mortal Kombat games (Deadly Alliance, Deception and Armageddon). You can see some of the game in action here.

Another big point of interest was something announced very recently about Kitana and other ladies of the MK universe being “realistically proportioned“. With this unfortunately also came sad news that Jade will not be in Mortal Kombat X and in her memory, one of Kitana’s fighting styles has her fighting in the style of Jade. Comparison screenshots to show the realistic ladies were posted on GameSpot showing MK9’s Mileena and the more realistic Kitana in MKX. A nice touch that will no doubt transfer well to the next versions of the game. NetherRealms’s Production Manager Spiro Anagnostakos had the following to say on the matter: “The mantra for this game has always been realism; heading towards a more realistic look, so the same thing applies to the proportions where we try to bring things back in per se to where they should be.”

With a total of fourteen characters confirmed so far, new and old, with more to come, the tenth entry in the Mortal Kombat main series of games is one that is sure to please. Mortal Kombat X, for those looking to sever body parts, rip hearts out, and simply beat people into a pulp, can look forward to doing so on April 14, 2015.
