Federal Trade Commission Persues Action Against THE DOOM THAT CAME TO ATLANTIC CITY Dev

Erik Chevalier is a now infamous game developer, not for his outstanding contributions to the gaming world, but for being the man who failed to produce the board game, The Doom that Came to Atlantic City, backed by Kickstarter, despite having $122,000 in funding. The scandal has even evoked the wrath of the Federal Trade Commission, who for the first time are perusing legal action against the proprietor of a funded Kickstarter campaign.

The Doom that Came to Atlantic City was a Monopoly style game with a Lovecraftian twist that had taken on a life of its own. The initial project boasted known designers Lee Moyer and Keith Baker as the creators, and hooked 1,246 patrons, inspiring them to empty their pockets. Unfortunately, it turned out that Moyer and Baker were duped by Chevalier, as well.

According to the FTC’s formal complaint, filed June 10, 2015, investigations shown Chevalier had spent most of the money raised on himself. CBR reported that this included “rent, moving expenses, personal equipment and licenses for another project”. Under the terms of the settlement filed in conjunction with the complaint, Chevalier is barred from further deceiving donors, such as through Kickstarter updates, and must honor requests for refunds up to $111,793.71.

Considering most of the donors pledged $75.00 or more in order to get a piece of the campaigns intriguing incentives, refund requests are pouring in. Due to volume and Chevalier’s current financial distress, the just order to honor refunds has been suspended until his financial situation improves.
