SHENMUE 3 Kickstarter Hits Goal of $2 Million in Less than 12 Hours

In a completely out of left field move at PlayStation’s E3 2015 presentation on June 15, 2015, Shenmue series writer/director Yu Suzuki appeared on-screen, discussing the game’s history and making a plea for funding support for the long-awaited third installment. Immediately upon Suzuki taking the stage, a Shenmue 3 crowdfunding campaign went live on Kickstarter and garnered more than $500,000 by the show’s end, nearly breaking Kickstarter’s servers in the process.

Before it was even 12 hours old, Shenmue 3 achieved its funding goal of $2 million.

Although a far cry from the original game’s $67 million development price tag, Shenmue 3‘s Yu Suzuki promises a true sequel Shenmue fans have been waiting 14 years for.

With 31 days left to go, Shenmue 3 is on the fast-track to becoming the highest crowdfunded video game in Kickstarter history. Competitors include Torment: Tides of Numenera, which raised $4.1 million in April 2013, and Ouya, albeit a console, raised $8.5 million in August 2012.

After less than a day of funding completed, it looks as though the #SaveShenmue campaign can already be upgraded to #SavedShenmue.

I am HYPED! 14 years of waiting and now it’s finally happening! My favourite game of all time will finally get its ending!

Agreed. I was elated to see it last night. Fangirled for a bit thereafter, too. Can’t wait!
